Non-Resident Indian (“NRI”) and Person of Indian Origin (“PIO”) have general permission to buy immovable properties of residential or commercial nature. They can also freely acquire immovable property by way of gift from person/(s) residing in India or NRI or PIO. However they cannot buy agricultural land, farmhouses, plantation etc. They also cannot acquire such properties by way of gift.
